.FOLKE KOBBERLING and MARTIN KALTWASSER. 1 November, 2008 in odd project | No comments
Over the past month Folke Köbberling and Martin Kaltwasser truth about enzyte have been building a giant amphitheatre out of junk, called Amphis. With the aid of volunteers and intrigued onlookers, the German duo have almost finished and the result is worth a visit. As a study in patchwork construction, it is a magical space of chambers fabricated by borrowers, and has a glory unmatched by any corporate office block. It helps that Kaltwasser is an architect, so the building is structurally sound and user-friendly. The two have been collaborating since 1998, creating amorphous forms out of trash that retain a childlike simplicity in spite of rigorous engineering. - Jessica Lack, The Guardian 23.9.2008 LINK: www.folkekoebberling.de 30 October, 2008 in art | No comments
‘Please don’t break my heart’. August 2007. Exhibited at “Poststuckism is the new black” exhibition at the Studio Warehouse Gallery, Glasgow. This work was made from around 100 sheets of super-white mounting board, super-glued together to create the 41 letters in the phrase “All the time I was making this I was thinking of you”. Standing at two meters tall, but only twelve centimetres deep, this precarious structure was supported by thin strips of wooden dowelling, forming an unlikely-looking scaffolding. And it was a little too unlikely looking. The structure was intended to be as precarious as possible but still stand, which allows for no human error. This is not the easiest thing to rule out at an exhibition opening, and towards the end of the night it was bumped into, and fell. I’m fascinated by the notion of style, which I consider an inevitable byproduct of any juxtaposition, accumulation, shaping or connection of materials. Even as I intentionally design dysfunctional solutions to ambiguous problems, I try to do so elegantly, saturating each object with art-historical (and design-historical) references. In 1962, Topps released the bubble-gum cards known as “Mars Attacks”. They were the creation of Len Brown and Woody Gelman. They were painted by the famous pulp-comic artist, Norm Saunders. Presented here, for the first time on the Net, are scanned reproductions of their genius… Above: Card 17: Beast and the Beauty. Nothing seemed to be able to stop the menacing invaders as they conducted their vigil of terror throughout the world. No barrier was strong enough to withstand the Martian’s powerful weapons, which were slicing through concrete as if it were a slab of butter. Defenseless victims were whisked away during the night, leaving families without any idea of their loved ones’ fate. The aliens destroyed houses of worship, leaving the terrified population without any sanctuary to turn to. Fear and panic gripped the world, and civilization became paralyzed by the Martians’ reign of terror. |
